Chunking- It Helps You Understand What You Read!

Directions:
1) Silently and independently read the text

2) Now number the paragraphs in order

3) Re-read the text, this time thinking about the function of each paragraph. Write the numbers of the paragraphs that have similar functions together in the boxes in the left hand column below.

4) What is the function that each group or “chunk” of paragraphs serve?  Write it in the left hand column under the numbers.

5) In the right hand column write a summary of the main ideas for each chunk.
